Seasonal Allergies: What Is Known and What May Help
General information · not medical advice
Seasonal allergies are the immune system reacting to pollen, and mainstream care works on exposure and on medicines a clinician or pharmacist can advise on. This page lists products on printed facts.

What hay fever is
Hay fever, or allergic rhinitis, is an immune reaction to airborne pollen - tree pollen in spring, grass in summer, weeds into autumn. It causes sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy watery eyes and an itchy throat.
It is not an infection and it is not contagious, though the symptoms overlap with a cold.
What mainstream guidance suggests
The NHS suggests reducing pollen exposure: checking the pollen forecast, keeping windows shut on high days, showering and changing clothes after time outside, and wearing wraparound sunglasses. Saline rinses help clear pollen from the nose and eyes.
Antihistamine tablets and steroid nasal sprays are the standard medical options; a pharmacist can advise, and a clinician is involved where symptoms are severe or asthma is present.
What is not established
No supplement is established for hay fever. Exposure control and saline rinses act physically; the rest is a conversation with a pharmacist or clinician rather than a shelf purchase marketed on a claim.
Self-care that is generally suggested
- Check the pollen forecast and limit time outside on high days.
- Keep windows shut and use a HEPA filter indoors.
- Shower and change clothes after being outdoors.
- Wraparound sunglasses to keep pollen from the eyes.
- A saline rinse or spray to clear the nose.
- Ask a pharmacist about antihistamines or a nasal spray.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for wheezing or difficulty breathing, or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, which can be a severe allergic reaction. See a clinician if hay fever symptoms disturb sleep, affect work or school, come with asthma, or are not controlled by what a pharmacist suggests. Pregnancy changes which medicines are suitable, so ask before using anything, and a child under two with allergic symptoms should be seen.

Products that may help

Every item below is listed on a property printed on the product label - form, grade, active ingredient, size, runtime or ingredient panel. None is listed because of a claim about your symptom, and none is presented as care. Amazon shows the current price on the linked page.
Pick 1
Preservative-free saline nasal spray
A saline spray is water with a stated concentration of sodium chloride, usually 0.65 percent (isotonic) or about 3 percent (hypertonic). A preservative-free bottle avoids benzalkonium chloride, which some people prefer to keep out of frequent use.
- Stated sodium chloride concentration
- Preservative-free format
- Fine mist versus a stream nozzle

Pick 2
Saline nasal rinse kit
A rinse kit uses a larger volume of saline than a spray, delivered by a squeeze bottle, neti pot or bulb. The format decides how the volume feels, and the sachets decide whether the salt is pre-measured.
- Pre-measured salt sachets versus loose salt
- Volume in ml per rinse
- Bottle, pot or bulb delivery

Pick 3
HEPA air purifier
An air purifier states its filter grade (true HEPA is H13 or above), its clean-air delivery rate, and the room size it is rated for. Those three figures let you compare units honestly.
- True HEPA filter grade (H13 or above)
- Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) stated
- Rated room size in square metres

Pick 4
Hypertonic saline nasal spray
A hypertonic spray states a salt concentration above the 0.9 percent of body fluid, commonly around 3 percent. The concentration is printed, so the only comparison that matters is the figure and the nozzle.
- Concentration printed as a percentage
- Single-ingredient (sodium chloride and water)
- Bottle size and pump type

Pick 5
Wraparound sunglasses
Wraparound glasses reduce the air and light reaching the eyes by their shape, which is a construction fact. The UV rating and the frame wrap are the comparison points.
- UV400 rating stated
- Wraparound frame shape
- Lens tint and coverage

Questions
Do saline rinses help hay fever?
They clear pollen and mucus from the nose, which is a physical action rather than a drug one. The label facts are the salt concentration and whether the format is a spray, a rinse or a pot.
Is hay fever contagious?
No. It is an immune reaction to pollen, not an infection, though the sneezing and blocked nose can look like a cold.
