Period Cramps: What Is Known and What May Help
General information · not medical advice
Period cramps are caused by the muscular contractions of the womb, and heat and simple pain relief are the mainstream first steps. This page sets out what is known, then lists products on printed facts.

Why period cramps happen
The womb contracts to shed its lining, and chemicals called prostaglandins make those contractions stronger, which reduces blood flow and causes the cramping ache. Cramps usually begin with the bleed and ease over the first day or two.
Pain that is severe, starts later in life, or comes with heavy bleeding can signal a condition such as endometriosis or fibroids, which a clinician can assess.
What mainstream guidance suggests
The NHS suggests heat - a hot-water bottle or a heat patch on the lower abdomen - plus gentle exercise, and anti-inflammatory pain relief such as ibuprofen taken as directed, ideally started at the first sign of cramps or bleeding. Continuous or hormonal contraception is sometimes used for heavy or severe periods, under medical advice.
Severe period pain, or pain that interferes with daily life, is assessed rather than endured.
What is not established
No supplement is established as managing period pain. Magnesium and omega-3 have small mixed studies; heat and anti-inflammatory pain relief have the strongest basis.
Self-care that is generally suggested
- Heat on the lower abdomen - a hot-water bottle or a heat patch.
- Gentle movement and stretching.
- Anti-inflammatory pain relief as directed, started early.
- Rest, and enough sleep and fluids.
- Note how pain, flow and cycle length change over months.
- See a clinician if pain is severe or stops you doing things.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for sudden severe one-sided pain with a positive pregnancy test, or for heavy bleeding with dizziness or fainting. See a clinician if period pain is severe or worsening, does not improve with heat and pain relief, starts after age twenty-five for the first time, or comes with very heavy periods, bleeding between periods, pain during sex, or difficulty becoming pregnant. A child under two is not a relevant age group here, but any very young person with severe pelvic pain should be seen.

Products that may help

Every item below is listed on a property printed on the product label - form, grade, active ingredient, size, runtime or ingredient panel. None is listed because of a claim about your symptom, and none is presented as care. Amazon shows the current price on the linked page.
Pick 1
Magnesium glycinate capsules
Glycinate binds magnesium to the amino acid glycine, making it a chelated form that many people choose for stomach comfort. The number that matters is elemental magnesium per capsule, because the grams of compound on the front panel include the glycine.
- Elemental magnesium declared per capsule
- Chelated, amino-acid-bound form
- Capsule count and cost per elemental mg

Pick 2
Reusable heat pack
A heat pack states the minutes it holds warmth and whether it is microwave or electric. Those are the practical differences between formats.
- Warmth duration in minutes
- Microwave, electric or gel format
- Cover material and washability

Pick 3
Omega-3 fish oil capsules
The number that matters on a fish oil is the combined EPA and DHA in milligrammes per capsule, not the total fish-oil weight. A certificate of analysis or a named third-party testing programme is the checkable quality marker.
- EPA and DHA in mg per capsule
- Total fish-oil weight not mistaken for omega-3
- Third-party tested or certified batch

Pick 4
Ginger root capsules
A ginger capsule states the milligrammes of dried root per capsule and, on a good label, a standardised gingerol figure. Both numbers let you compare jars on content rather than on the front of the bottle.
- Stated mg of dried root per capsule
- Standardised gingerol percentage where offered
- Single-ingredient panel

Pick 5
Curcumin capsules with a standardised extract
A curcumin product is judged on the standardised curcuminoid percentage and the milligrammes per capsule, and often pairs the extract with black pepper or a phospholipid carrier. Those are printed facts.
- Standardised curcuminoid percentage stated
- Milligrammes per capsule
- Piperine or phospholipid carrier named

Questions
Does heat help period cramps?
Heat is one of the mainstream first steps, alongside anti-inflammatory pain relief. A hot-water bottle or a reusable heat patch are both judged on how long they hold warmth.
When should period pain be assessed?
When it is severe or worsening, does not settle with heat and pain relief, starts later in life, or comes with heavy bleeding, pain during sex, or difficulty becoming pregnant.
