Nausea: What Is Known and What May Help
General information · not medical advice
Nausea is the urge to vomit without necessarily doing so, and it has many everyday triggers. This page sets out what is known, then lists products on facts their labels carry.

What nausea is
Nausea is the sensation that you may vomit, driven by the brain's vomiting centre and by signals from the gut. It often comes with a queasy stomach, salivation and sweating.
Common triggers are gut infections, motion sickness, certain smells or foods, migraine, some medicines, anxiety, and - importantly - pregnancy and some heart conditions.
What mainstream guidance suggests
The NHS advises small sips of fluid, eating bland food when able, fresh air, and ginger as a traditional option; it also notes that acupressure bands are used by some people. Antihistamine or other anti-sickness medicines are used under advice and by a clinician where the cause is unclear.
Ongoing or unexplained nausea, especially with weight loss or pain, is assessed rather than self-managed.
What is not established
No supplement is established as managing nausea. Ginger and acupressure have small, mixed studies; both are comfort options rather than something that changes the underlying cause.
Self-care that is generally suggested
- Small sips of fluid, and bland food when you feel able.
- Fresh air and a slow, seated rest.
- Ginger tea or a ginger capsule, a traditional comfort option.
- An acupressure band on the wrist, used by some people.
- Avoid strong smells, alcohol and greasy food.
- Seek advice if it persists or you cannot keep fluids down.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for chest pain with nausea and sweating (nausea can be a heart symptom), a head injury, confusion, a very severe headache, or inability to keep any fluid down with signs of dehydration. See a clinician if nausea lasts more than two days, or comes with weight loss, blood, severe abdominal pain, or a possible pregnancy - because pregnancy changes what is safe. A child under two should be seen.

Products that may help

Every item below is listed on a property printed on the product label - form, grade, active ingredient, size, runtime or ingredient panel. None is listed because of a claim about your symptom, and none is presented as care. Amazon shows the current price on the linked page.
Pick 1
Ginger root capsules
A ginger capsule states the milligrammes of dried root per capsule and, on a good label, a standardised gingerol figure. Both numbers let you compare jars on content rather than on the front of the bottle.
- Stated mg of dried root per capsule
- Standardised gingerol percentage where offered
- Single-ingredient panel

Pick 2
Ginger tea (whole root)
Dried ginger root is graded on whether it is sliced root or a fine powder, and on where it was grown. Sliced root is visible in the bag and makes the grade easy to check.
- Sliced or whole root rather than dust
- Origin named on the pack
- Caffeine-free

Pick 3
Peppermint tea (whole leaf)
Peppermint tea is dried Mentha species leaf, and the useful label facts are the species and whether the leaf is whole or broken. Whole leaf steeps clear and keeps its aroma longer in the tin.
- Species named (Mentha x piperita)
- Whole leaf rather than dust
- Caffeine-free

Pick 4
Oral rehydration electrolyte powder
An oral rehydration formula states its sodium, potassium and glucose in grams per sachet, because the ratio is the point of the formulation. Compare the figures and the sugar content, and note whether the salt is pre-measured.
- Sodium, potassium and glucose in grams per serving
- Added-sugar figure on the panel
- Pre-measured sachets versus a scoop

Pick 5
Acupressure wristband
An acupressure band is a physical device: a plastic stud on a knitted band that presses a fixed point on the wrist. Size and stud placement are the only specifications.
- Stud placement on the band
- Reusable and machine washable
- One size or adjustable

Questions
Does ginger help nausea?
It is a traditional comfort option with small, mixed studies. Check the milligrammes of root per capsule, or the grade of the tea, because the label is what you can compare.
When is nausea serious?
Chest pain with nausea and sweating, a head injury, confusion, or being unable to keep fluids down are all reasons to get help promptly.
