Migraine is a neurological condition, not just a bad headache, and it is managed with a plan. This page sets out what is known and then lists products on printed facts rather than on promises.

What migraine is

Migraine is a recurrent neurological condition with attacks of often one-sided, throbbing pain, sensitivity to light and sound, and nausea. Some people get an aura - usually a visual disturbance - before the pain.

It is common and can be disabling, and it is diagnosed on the pattern of attacks rather than on any single test.

What mainstream guidance suggests

The NHS suggests resting in a dark quiet room, simple pain relief taken early, and keeping a diary of triggers and patterns. For frequent attacks, a clinician may offer medicine to stop attacks or to reduce how often they come; this is a medical decision, not a shelf one.

Regular sleep, meals and hydration are the usual lifestyle advice, and some people find certain foods or drinks trigger attacks, which the diary helps identify. Riboflavin and magnesium are used as supports by some clinicians; the trial evidence is mixed.

What is not established

No over-the-counter supplement is established as stopping a migraine attack. Magnesium and riboflavin appear in guidance as options under medical direction, with mixed evidence, and nothing here replaces a clinician's plan.

Self-care that is generally suggested

  • Rest in a dark, quiet, cool room during an attack.
  • Simple pain relief taken early, as directed.
  • Keep regular sleep, meals and fluids.
  • Keep a diary of attacks and possible triggers.
  • A cold pack on the forehead and neck often helps comfort.
  • Ask a clinician about a plan for attacks and for how often they come.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for a sudden severe headache unlike any before, a migraine with fever and a stiff neck, weakness, confusion, slurred speech or loss of vision that does not pass, or the first severe headache of pregnancy. See a clinician if headache pattern changes, attacks are getting more frequent, or painkillers are being used often. Children under two, pregnancy and a weakened immune system are reasons to seek advice rather than self-manage.

Products that may help

Every item below is listed on a property printed on the product label - form, grade, active ingredient, size, runtime or ingredient panel. None is listed because of a claim about your symptom, and none is presented as care. Amazon shows the current price on the linked page.

Pick 1

Magnesium citrate powder or capsules

Citrate is one of the better-absorbed and most widely stocked forms, and the powder lets you split a serving. Read the Supplement Facts panel for elemental magnesium rather than the total compound weight.

  • Elemental magnesium stated per serving
  • Powder for flexible dosing, capsules for travel
  • Compare cost per elemental mg across forms

Pick 2

Riboflavin (vitamin B2) tablets

Riboflavin tablets state the milligrammes of vitamin B2 per tablet, and some are sold at the higher figures used in clinical studies. The figure per tablet is the comparison point.

  • Milligrammes per tablet stated
  • Single-ingredient panel
  • Tablet count and cost per milligramme

Pick 3

Cold therapy head wrap

A cold head wrap is judged on the gel placement, the stretch of the fabric, and how long it holds cold. Those are construction facts rather than claims.

  • Gel panel placement and coverage
  • Stretch fabric and fit
  • Time held cold per freeze

Pick 4

Peppermint oil roll-on

A roll-on states the species - Mentha x piperita for true peppermint - and the method of extraction. Steam-distilled oil of a named species is the checkable version.

  • Species named, steam-distilled
  • Dilution stated on the label
  • Roll-on applicator format

Pick 5

Oral rehydration electrolyte powder

An oral rehydration formula states its sodium, potassium and glucose in grams per sachet, because the ratio is the point of the formulation. Compare the figures and the sugar content, and note whether the salt is pre-measured.

  • Sodium, potassium and glucose in grams per serving
  • Added-sugar figure on the panel
  • Pre-measured sachets versus a scoop

Questions

Do magnesium or riboflavin help migraine?

They are used by some clinicians as supports and appear in guidance, but the trial evidence is mixed. Any plan for frequent attacks should come from a clinician.

When is a migraine an emergency?

A sudden severe headache unlike any before, or one with fever and a stiff neck, weakness, confusion or vision loss that does not pass, needs urgent assessment.
