Indigestion is discomfort in the upper abdomen after eating, and it is usually about habits rather than a single cause. This page sets out what is known, then lists products on printed facts.

What indigestion is

Indigestion, or dyspepsia, is discomfort in the upper abdomen - fullness, gnawing, burning or bloating - often during or after meals. It overlaps with reflux and with irritable bowel, and it is common.

It is made more likely by large, rich or late meals, alcohol, coffee, some medicines and stress.

What mainstream guidance suggests

The NHS suggests smaller meals, less alcohol and coffee, avoiding late eating, and losing excess weight where relevant. Antacids are used for occasional comfort, and a clinician reviews medicines that may be contributing.

Symptoms that persist beyond a few weeks, or that come with the red flags below, are assessed rather than self-managed.

What is not established

No supplement is established as managing indigestion. Peppermint oil, fennel and ginger are traditional comfort options with limited evidence; they are supports rather than something that changes the underlying cause.

Self-care that is generally suggested

  • Smaller, slower meals and less rich food.
  • Less alcohol and coffee.
  • Do not eat late at night.
  • Losing excess weight if it is relevant.
  • A herbal tea or an antacid for occasional comfort.
  • See a clinician if it persists or comes with a red flag.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for chest pain that could be the heart, vomiting blood, or black tarry stools. See a clinician if indigestion is new after age fifty-five, lasts more than a few weeks, or comes with difficulty swallowing, food sticking, weight loss, anaemia, or a family history of stomach or oesophageal conditions. Pregnancy and a child under two are reasons to seek advice rather than self-manage.

Products that may help

Every item below is listed on a property printed on the product label - form, grade, active ingredient, size, runtime or ingredient panel. None is listed because of a claim about your symptom, and none is presented as care. Amazon shows the current price on the linked page.

Pick 1

Peppermint oil enteric capsules

An enteric coating is designed to delay where the capsule opens, which is a delivery property printed on the label. Menthol content per capsule and the coating type are the comparison points.

  • Enteric or delayed-release coating stated
  • Menthol content per capsule
  • Single-ingredient oil

Pick 2

Ginger tea (whole root)

Dried ginger root is graded on whether it is sliced root or a fine powder, and on where it was grown. Sliced root is visible in the bag and makes the grade easy to check.

  • Sliced or whole root rather than dust
  • Origin named on the pack
  • Caffeine-free

Pick 3

Multi-strain probiotic capsule

A multi-strain product is only as comparable as its list: how many strains are named individually, the total CFU, and whether the capsule is delayed-release. A total CFU behind a proprietary blend gives you nothing to compare.

  • Each strain named, not hidden in a proprietary blend
  • Total CFU per capsule stated
  • Delayed-release or enteric-coated capsule

Pick 4

Fennel seed tea

Fennel is sold as whole seed or ground, and whole seed stays aromatic far longer in the cupboard. The label facts are the grade and the origin.

  • Whole seed rather than ground
  • Origin named on the pack
  • Caffeine-free

Pick 5

Lactase enzyme tablets

A lactase product states its activity in FCC units per tablet, which is the figure that lets you compare one brand with another. Tablets and drops differ in how you use them.

  • Activity in FCC units (ALU) per tablet
  • Tablet versus liquid drops
  • Single-enzyme panel

Questions

What is dyspepsia?

Dyspepsia is the medical word for indigestion: upper-abdominal discomfort, fullness or burning around meals. Habits and assessment come before any shelf product.

Can peppermint oil help?

Peppermint oil is a traditional comfort option with limited evidence. An enteric capsule delays where it opens, which is a label fact you can compare.
