Heartburn is stomach acid irritating the food pipe, and most of the time it is tied to meals and posture. Mainstream guidance starts with habits; the picks below rest on printed facts.

What heartburn is

Heartburn is a burning feeling behind the breastbone caused by stomach contents moving up into the food pipe, where the lining is not built for acid. It is common and is made worse by large or late meals, alcohol, and lying down soon after eating.

When it happens often, it is called reflux disease (GORD), which a clinician can assess.

What mainstream guidance suggests

The NHS suggests smaller, earlier meals, less alcohol and coffee, weight management where relevant, and raising the head of the bed rather than stacking pillows. Antacids and alginates are the usual first shelf option; longer-term acid-reducing medicines are prescribed by a clinician.

A food and symptom diary usually shows which meals set it off.

What is not established

No supplement is established as managing reflux. Antacids and alginates act on acid and on the physical barrier; they are for comfort and are not a substitute for assessment when the red flags below apply.

Self-care that is generally suggested

  • Smaller meals, eaten earlier in the evening.
  • Less alcohol, coffee and rich food.
  • Raise the head of the bed rather than stacking pillows.
  • Avoid lying down for two to three hours after eating.
  • Losing excess weight if it is relevant.
  • An alginate or antacid as directed for occasional comfort.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for chest pain that could be the heart - especially with breathlessness, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw - because heart and gut pain can feel alike. See a clinician if heartburn is frequent, needs antacids most days, or comes with difficulty swallowing, food sticking, vomiting, weight loss, or black stools. Pregnancy changes the options, and a child under two should be seen.

Products that may help

Every item below is listed on a property printed on the product label - form, grade, active ingredient, size, runtime or ingredient panel. None is listed because of a claim about your symptom, and none is presented as care. Amazon shows the current price on the linked page.

Pick 1

Sodium alginate antacid liquid

An alginate antacid states its sodium alginate in milligrammes or grammes per dose, and often adds calcium or sodium bicarbonate. The alginate figure is the comparison point.

  • Sodium alginate per dose stated
  • Added bicarbonate and its sodium load
  • Liquid versus chewable format

Pick 2

Calcium carbonate antacid tablets

A calcium carbonate tablet states the elemental calcium per tablet, which is only about 40 percent of the compound weight. Chewable and swallow formats differ in dose per tablet.

  • Elemental calcium per tablet
  • Compound weight versus elemental calcium
  • Chewable versus swallowed format

Pick 3

Bed wedge pillow for incline

A wedge pillow holds the upper body at an angle the whole night, which a stack of ordinary pillows will not. The measurable facts are the incline angle or height and the foam density.

  • Incline angle or height stated
  • Foam density and cover material
  • Width and washability

Pick 4

Sugar-free chewing gum

The label facts on gum are the sweetener - xylitol, sorbitol or a blend - and the count per pack. Sugar-free gum avoids the sucrose that makes a stick a boiled sweet.

  • Sweetener type on the panel
  • Sugar-free, with no sucrose
  • Count per pack and cost per piece

Pick 5

Fennel seed tea

Fennel is sold as whole seed or ground, and whole seed stays aromatic far longer in the cupboard. The label facts are the grade and the origin.

  • Whole seed rather than ground
  • Origin named on the pack
  • Caffeine-free

Questions

Is heartburn the same as a heart problem?

No, but the pain can feel alike. Chest pain with breathlessness, sweating or pain spreading to the arm or jaw is an emergency and should be assessed as a possible heart problem.

How do alginates differ from antacids?

An antacid neutralises acid; an alginate forms a physical barrier that floats on top of the stomach contents. The alginate figure per dose is the label comparison.
