Cough: What Is Known and What May Help
General information · not medical advice
A cough is a reflex that clears the airway, and most coughs after a cold last longer than people expect. This page sets out what is known and what on the shelf is justified by a label fact.

Why a cough happens
A cough is a protective reflex: receptors in the airway trigger a sharp expulsion of air to clear mucus, dust or an irritant. A short-lived cough with a cold is normal, and a cough after a viral infection often lingers for three to eight weeks even when everything else has settled.
Coughs are usually described as dry or chesty, because the two behave differently and the products sold for them differ.
What mainstream guidance suggests
The NHS advises time, fluids and rest for most coughs, and notes that honey is suggested for adults and for children over one year old; it specifically does not recommend honey under twelve months because of the risk of infant botulism. A Cochrane review found honey may reduce cough frequency in children, while rating the certainty of that evidence as low.
Over-the-counter cough medicines contain a small number of monograph actives - among them menthol and dextromethorphan - and the evidence for most of them in adults is weak.
What is not established
No shelf product is established as shortening a cough caused by infection. Warm drinks, moist air and a lozenge act on comfort; they are not a substitute for care when the red flags below apply.
Self-care that is generally suggested
- Sip fluids and keep the room from getting too dry.
- Honey in a warm drink for adults and children over one year.
- A cool-mist humidifier or a steamy bathroom can ease a dry throat.
- Avoid smoke and other airway irritants.
- A pillow raised a little can help a night-time cough.
- Never give honey to a child under twelve months.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing up blood, or a cough with blue lips or a struggle to speak. See a clinician if a cough lasts more than three weeks, keeps worsening, brings fever above 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit), or comes with weight loss, night sweats or breathlessness. Take a child under two to a clinician, and seek advice in pregnancy rather than self-managing.

Products that may help

Every item below is listed on a property printed on the product label - form, grade, active ingredient, size, runtime or ingredient panel. None is listed because of a claim about your symptom, and none is presented as care. Amazon shows the current price on the linked page.
Pick 1
Raw, unfiltered honey
Raw honey is strained rather than fine-filtered and is not taken above typical pasteurisation temperature, so more of its natural pollen and enzymes remain. A jar that names its origin and harvest can be compared like for like against another of the same source.
- Origin and harvest named on the label
- Strained, not fine-filtered
- Crystallisation is normal and reversible in a warm-water bath

Pick 2
Buckwheat honey (dark varietal)
Buckwheat is a dark, strongly flavoured varietal that is easy to identify on the label by its named floral source. Darker varietals carry more of the phenolic compounds that give honey its colour, a difference you can see in the jar.
- Named varietal rather than an anonymous blend
- Colour and origin stated
- Compare cost per gram across varietals

Pick 3
Menthol throat lozenges
Menthol is an FDA over-the-counter monograph cough suppressant and topical analgesic, and on a lozenge it produces an immediate cooling sensation. Sugar-free versions use isomalt or sorbitol instead of sucrose, which matters if you take several across a day.
- Menthol named as the active ingredient
- Sugar-free isomalt or sorbitol options
- Count per pack and cost per lozenge

Pick 4
Cool-mist humidifier
The two numbers that decide a humidifier are tank size, which sets how many nights you get between refills, and runtime per fill. A cool-mist unit is chosen over a warm-mist one for rooms with children because it heats no water.
- Tank size in litres
- Runtime per fill in hours
- Cool-mist rather than steam

Pick 5
Preservative-free saline nasal spray
A saline spray is water with a stated concentration of sodium chloride, usually 0.65 percent (isotonic) or about 3 percent (hypertonic). A preservative-free bottle avoids benzalkonium chloride, which some people prefer to keep out of frequent use.
- Stated sodium chloride concentration
- Preservative-free format
- Fine mist versus a stream nozzle

Questions
How long should a cough last?
A cough after a viral infection commonly lasts three to eight weeks. If it is still there after three weeks, or is getting worse, see a clinician.
Does honey work for a cough?
It is the one home remedy that appears in official guidance. It is suggested for adults and children over one year old; the evidence is rated low-certainty, and it must never be given under twelve months.
