Constipation: What Is Known and What May Help
General information · not medical advice
Constipation is usually about fibre, fluid, movement and routine, and mainstream guidance works through those first. This page sets out what is known, then lists products on printed facts.

What constipation is
Constipation means passing stools less often than usual for you, or finding them hard and difficult to pass. Normal frequency varies widely between people, so the change from your own pattern is what matters.
Common causes are not enough fibre or fluid, low activity, ignoring the urge, some medicines, pregnancy, and a change in routine such as travel.
What mainstream guidance suggests
The NHS suggests more fibre, more fluid, regular movement, and going when you feel the urge rather than putting it off. Bulk-forming fibre such as psyllium is the usual first shelf option; it must be taken with plenty of water.
Osmotic and stimulant laxatives are used short-term and under advice. If constipation is long-standing or comes with the red flags below, it is assessed rather than self-managed.
What is not established
No supplement is established as a general fix for constipation. Fibre works when it is the missing piece; magnesium salts act osmotically, which is a mechanism rather than a claim, and they should be used with care.
Self-care that is generally suggested
- More fibre: fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and a bulk-forming fibre taken with water.
- More fluid through the day.
- Regular activity and movement.
- Go when you feel the urge, and keep a routine.
- A footstool so the knees sit above the hips.
- See a clinician if it persists or brings a red flag.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for a rigid, painful abdomen, vomiting, or inability to pass stool or wind. See a clinician if constipation is new and you are over fifty, lasts more than a few weeks, or comes with blood in the stool, weight loss, anaemia, or a family history of bowel problems. Pregnancy, a weakened immune system and a child under two are reasons to seek advice rather than self-manage.

Products that may help

Every item below is listed on a property printed on the product label - form, grade, active ingredient, size, runtime or ingredient panel. None is listed because of a claim about your symptom, and none is presented as care. Amazon shows the current price on the linked page.
Pick 1
Psyllium husk powder
Psyllium is a soluble fibre sold as a husk, and the label states the fibre in grammes per serving and whether the product is plain or flavoured. Unflavoured husk lets you dose it yourself.
- Soluble fibre in grams per serving
- Unflavoured, single-ingredient
- Cost per gram of fibre

Pick 2
Magnesium citrate powder or capsules
Citrate is one of the better-absorbed and most widely stocked forms, and the powder lets you split a serving. Read the Supplement Facts panel for elemental magnesium rather than the total compound weight.
- Elemental magnesium stated per serving
- Powder for flexible dosing, capsules for travel
- Compare cost per elemental mg across forms

Pick 3
Prune juice
A prune juice is graded on the percentage of juice it contains and on whether sugar is added. Those two figures separate a pressed juice from a sweetened drink.
- Juice percentage stated
- No added sugar
- Bottle size and servings per bottle

Pick 4
Magnesium oxide tablets
Oxide is the cheapest and most common form on pharmacy shelves and the least absorbed per milligram. It is still a legitimate, low-cost way to close a dietary gap if a plain tablet is what you will take daily.
- Lowest cost per tablet
- Widely stocked in physical stores
- Check elemental magnesium on the Supplement Facts panel

Pick 5
Multi-strain probiotic capsule
A multi-strain product is only as comparable as its list: how many strains are named individually, the total CFU, and whether the capsule is delayed-release. A total CFU behind a proprietary blend gives you nothing to compare.
- Each strain named, not hidden in a proprietary blend
- Total CFU per capsule stated
- Delayed-release or enteric-coated capsule

Questions
How much water with psyllium?
A full glass or more with each dose, as the pack directs. Bulk-forming fibre needs fluid, or it can make matters worse rather than better.
When is constipation a red flag?
New constipation over fifty, blood in the stool, weight loss, anaemia, a rigid painful abdomen or vomiting are all reasons to see a clinician promptly.
