Cold and Flu: What Is Known and What May Help

A cold is a mild viral infection of the nose and throat; flu is a sharper, more systemic illness. Mainstream care is rest, fluids and watching for complications, and this page lists products on printed facts.

Cold versus flu

A common cold comes on slowly with a runny nose, sneezing and sore throat, and usually settles in about a week. Influenza comes on quickly with fever, aching muscles, headache and exhaustion, and can take longer to clear.

Both are viral, and both spread mainly by droplets and by hands, which is why handwashing matters.

What mainstream guidance suggests

The NHS advises rest, fluids, and simple pain relief for fever and aches, taken as directed. Honey is suggested for cough in adults and children over one year, and never under twelve months. Antibiotics do not work on viruses and are not given for an ordinary cold.

Flu vaccination reduces the chance of a serious season for those offered it, and a clinician should see anyone in a higher-risk group who becomes unwell.

What is not established

No over-the-counter product is established as shortening a cold. Zinc lozenges and elderberry have mixed, low-certainty evidence; comfort measures and rest are the reliable part.

Self-care that is generally suggested

  • Rest and drink plenty of fluids.
  • Paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed for fever and aches.
  • Honey for cough, for adults and children over one year only.
  • A cool-mist humidifier and saline spray for a blocked nose.
  • Stay home while you are unwell and wash your hands often.
  • Ask about the flu vaccine if you are in an at-risk group.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, a fever that will not come down, or a rash that does not fade under pressure. See a clinician if symptoms last more than three weeks, keep worsening after a week, or come with breathlessness. Babies and children under two, people who are pregnant, older adults, and anyone with a long-term condition such as asthma, diabetes or a weakened immune system should be seen early rather than self-managing.

Products that may help

Affiliate section · tagged Amazon links

Every item below is listed on a property printed on the product label - form, grade, active ingredient, size, runtime or ingredient panel. None is listed because of a claim about your symptom, and none is presented as care. Amazon shows the current price on the linked page.

Pick 1

Elderberry syrup with a stated extract

A syrup is sugar, water and extract, so the useful facts are the species named as Sambucus nigra, the extract amount per serving, and how the dose is measured. Those are printed on a good label.

  • Species named as Sambucus nigra
  • Stated extract per serving
  • Marked spoon or cap for dosing

Pick 2

Elderberry gummies with a stated extract

A gummy is mostly carrier, so what separates jars is how much standardised elderberry extract each one contains and whether that figure is stated. Sugar content is the daily-use tiebreaker.

  • Stated extract amount per serving
  • Added-sugar figure on the panel
  • Pectin or gelatin gelling agent named

Pick 3

Raw, unfiltered honey

Raw honey is strained rather than fine-filtered and is not taken above typical pasteurisation temperature, so more of its natural pollen and enzymes remain. A jar that names its origin and harvest can be compared like for like against another of the same source.

  • Origin and harvest named on the label
  • Strained, not fine-filtered
  • Crystallisation is normal and reversible in a warm-water bath

Pick 4

Cool-mist humidifier

The two numbers that decide a humidifier are tank size, which sets how many nights you get between refills, and runtime per fill. A cool-mist unit is chosen over a warm-mist one for rooms with children because it heats no water.

  • Tank size in litres
  • Runtime per fill in hours
  • Cool-mist rather than steam

Pick 5

Zinc lozenges

Zinc lozenges are sold for the mineral rather than as a demulcent, have a distinctive metallic taste, and are usually taken on a schedule. Read the elemental zinc per lozenge and remember the adult upper limit of 40 mg of zinc a day.

  • Elemental zinc per lozenge on the panel
  • Adult upper limit is 40 mg of zinc a day
  • Metallic taste varies by salt (acetate, gluconate, citrate)

Questions

Do cold medicines shorten a cold?

No product is established as shortening a cold. They can ease symptoms, which is a comfort effect, and rest, fluids and time do the rest.

Is elderberry worth trying?

The evidence is mixed and rated low-certainty, and the species Sambucus nigra and the extract figure are what you can check on the label. Never give raw or homemade elderberry preparations to children.
