Bloating: What Is Known and What May Help
General information · not medical advice
Bloating is a feeling of fullness or pressure in the abdomen, and most often it follows food and digestion. This page sets out what is known, then lists products on printed facts alone.

What bloating usually is
Bloating is the sensation of abdominal fullness or pressure, sometimes with visible swelling. It commonly follows the gut handling gas and fluid, and it is often worse after large or rich meals, fizzy drinks, or hard-to-digest sugars.
It is a symptom, not a diagnosis: constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance and, less often, other conditions can all sit behind it.
What mainstream guidance suggests
The NHS suggests eating slowly, avoiding fizzy drinks and cutting back on foods that set it off, which a short food diary usually reveals. Regular meals and steady fluid intake help, and addressing constipation first often eases bloating.
For persistent bloating with other gut symptoms, a clinician may assess for IBS or lactose intolerance. Probiotics are used by some people; the evidence is strain-specific and strongest for certain uses rather than for bloating in general.
What is not established
No product is established as a general fix for bloating. Probiotic effects are strain-specific, fibre helps only when constipation is the driver, and everything here is a support rather than a substitute for assessment.
Self-care that is generally suggested
- Eat slowly and go easy on fizzy drinks and large rich meals.
- Keep a short food and symptom diary to spot triggers.
- Address constipation first if it is present.
- Regular meals and steady fluids.
- Gentle walking after meals.
- See a clinician if bloating persists or is joined by other symptoms.
When to seek care
See a clinician if bloating is persistent or worsening, comes with weight loss, blood in stool, a change in bowel habit lasting weeks, fever, or pain that wakes you. Get urgent help for severe pain with a rigid tender abdomen or vomiting blood. Pregnancy, a weakened immune system and children under two are reasons to ask rather than self-manage.

Products that may help

Every item below is listed on a property printed on the product label - form, grade, active ingredient, size, runtime or ingredient panel. None is listed because of a claim about your symptom, and none is presented as care. Amazon shows the current price on the linked page.
Pick 1
Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG capsules (LGG)
LGG is a named strain - Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, catalogued as ATCC 53103 - so a label that names it to strain level gives a specific identity rather than a genus. The CFU figure should be guaranteed at end of shelf life.
- Strain written as Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG)
- CFU declared per capsule
- Single-strain, so the count maps to one named organism

Pick 2
Multi-strain probiotic capsule
A multi-strain product is only as comparable as its list: how many strains are named individually, the total CFU, and whether the capsule is delayed-release. A total CFU behind a proprietary blend gives you nothing to compare.
- Each strain named, not hidden in a proprietary blend
- Total CFU per capsule stated
- Delayed-release or enteric-coated capsule

Pick 3
Peppermint oil enteric capsules
An enteric coating is designed to delay where the capsule opens, which is a delivery property printed on the label. Menthol content per capsule and the coating type are the comparison points.
- Enteric or delayed-release coating stated
- Menthol content per capsule
- Single-ingredient oil

Pick 4
Fennel seed tea
Fennel is sold as whole seed or ground, and whole seed stays aromatic far longer in the cupboard. The label facts are the grade and the origin.
- Whole seed rather than ground
- Origin named on the pack
- Caffeine-free

Pick 5
Lactase enzyme tablets
A lactase product states its activity in FCC units per tablet, which is the figure that lets you compare one brand with another. Tablets and drops differ in how you use them.
- Activity in FCC units (ALU) per tablet
- Tablet versus liquid drops
- Single-enzyme panel

Questions
Does a probiotic help bloating?
Effects are strain-specific and the evidence is strongest for particular uses rather than for bloating in general. A label written out to strain level is the only one worth comparing.
What if it keeps coming back?
Persistent bloating, or bloating with weight loss, blood, a lasting change in bowel habit or pain that wakes you, is a reason to see a clinician rather than to try another product.
