Anxiety: What Is Known and What May Help

Anxiety is a normal response that becomes a problem when it is out of proportion or constant. Mainstream care is talking therapy first; this page explains that and then lists products on label facts alone.

What anxiety is

Anxiety is the body's alerting response - faster heart rate, tense muscles, restless thoughts - switched on when there is no immediate threat. It is diagnosed as a disorder when it is persistent, hard to control and interferes with daily life.

Physical health can imitate it: an overactive thyroid, some heart rhythms, caffeine and some medicines all produce similar feelings, which is one reason a clinician may run tests.

What mainstream guidance suggests

The NHS recommends talking therapies, especially cognitive behavioural therapy, as the first-line option, with breathing and grounding exercises, regular exercise, less caffeine and less alcohol alongside. Where medicine is used, it is usually an SSRI, prescribed and monitored by a clinician.

Benzodiazepines are avoided for more than short periods because of dependence.

What is not established

No supplement is established as managing an anxiety disorder. Some ingredients, such as ashwagandha and L-theanine, have small short-term studies with mixed results; NIH's complementary-health centre notes that the evidence for most such products is limited and that they are not a substitute for psychological care.

Self-care that is generally suggested

  • Slow breathing: a longer out-breath than in-breath, for a few minutes.
  • Regular exercise and daylight.
  • Less caffeine and alcohol, which both feed physical anxiety.
  • Keep a simple written note of worries and triggers.
  • Tell someone you trust and consider a talking therapy such as CBT.
  • If it is constant or affecting work or relationships, see a clinician.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help if anxiety comes with chest pain, a fast or irregular heartbeat you have not had checked, fainting, or thoughts of harming yourself or others. See a clinician if anxiety lasts weeks, stops you working or leaving the house, or comes with panic attacks. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and any other medicines are reasons to ask before taking a supplement, and never give one to a child under two.

Products that may help

Affiliate section · tagged Amazon links

Every item below is listed on a property printed on the product label - form, grade, active ingredient, size, runtime or ingredient panel. None is listed because of a claim about your symptom, and none is presented as care. Amazon shows the current price on the linked page.

Pick 1

Magnesium glycinate capsules

Glycinate binds magnesium to the amino acid glycine, making it a chelated form that many people choose for stomach comfort. The number that matters is elemental magnesium per capsule, because the grams of compound on the front panel include the glycine.

  • Elemental magnesium declared per capsule
  • Chelated, amino-acid-bound form
  • Capsule count and cost per elemental mg

Pick 2

L-theanine capsules

L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea, sold as a stated milligramme per capsule, usually 100 to 200 mg. The single-ingredient panel and the figure per capsule are the comparison points.

  • Stated mg per capsule
  • Single-ingredient panel
  • Capsule versus chewable format

Pick 3

Ashwagandha root extract capsules

An ashwagandha label is judged on whether the root extract is standardised and to what figure - for example a stated withanolide percentage - and on the milligrammes per capsule. Root-only preparations are labelled as such.

  • Standardised extract figure on the label
  • Root extract rather than an unnamed blend
  • Stated mg per capsule

Pick 4

Chamomile tea (whole flower)

Whole flower heads are a different grade from the dust and fannings in a cheap bag, and the difference is visible in the dry tea. A named origin and a whole-flower grade give you something to compare between boxes.

  • Whole flower heads rather than fannings
  • Named origin on the pack
  • Caffeine-free leaf and flower

Pick 5

Topical magnesium lotion

A topical magnesium product states how much elemental magnesium is in each pump or teaspoon, and whether the base is water, oil or a cream. Those are the comparison points.

  • Elemental magnesium per pump or dose
  • Base type (lotion, oil, gel)
  • Fragrance-free option where wanted

Questions

Is there a supplement for anxiety?

No supplement is established as managing an anxiety disorder. Small studies on ingredients such as ashwagandha and L-theanine are mixed and short, and nothing replaces talking therapy when anxiety is persistent.

When should I see someone?

When it is persistent, hard to control, or interfering with daily life - or straight away if you have thoughts of harming yourself. Talking therapy is the mainstream first step.
