Best Magnesium Supplement: How to Choose
Magnesium supplements differ far more in what is printed on the label than in anything the packaging promises. This page sets out the label arithmetic that actually separates one jar from another, then lists picks justified on form, elemental content, testing and cost - nothing else.
The label arithmetic that decides everything
The front of a magnesium jar usually advertises the weight of the whole compound. The Supplement Facts panel, by law, states the elemental magnesium per serving and the percentage of the Daily Value. Those two numbers can differ by a factor of two or more. About 400 mg of magnesium oxide supplies roughly 240 mg of elemental magnesium; 1,000 mg of magnesium glycinate supplies well under 150 mg. If a jar never states elemental magnesium, you cannot compare it with anything.
The Daily Value for magnesium is set at 420 mg for adults. A tablet that says '100% DV' is really stating that one serving covers the reference intake for the day, which is a useful anchor when you are comparing a cheap oxide tablet with a pricier chelate.
The forms you will see on the shelf
- Oxide - the cheapest and most common form, and the least absorbed per milligram. A plain tablet you will take daily.
- Citrate - well absorbed and widely stocked; powders allow flexible dosing.
- Glycinate - magnesium bound to glycine; a chelated form usually chosen for stomach comfort.
- Malate - bound to malic acid; chelated, and often a smaller capsule at the same elemental dose.
- L-threonate - a newer proprietary chelate, the most expensive per elemental milligram, and commonly labelled as the compound rather than the mineral.
What we look for, in order
First, elemental magnesium stated per serving. Second, the form named precisely, not as a proprietary blend. Third, an excipient and allergen list you can read. Fourth, evidence of third-party testing, which is the only practical way a shopper can check identity and purity for a product the FDA does not approve before market. Fifth, cost per elemental milligram, which is the honest way to compare a bulk oxide bottle with a small chelated one.
We do not rank on price alone, on flavour, or on anything a manufacturer claims the mineral will do for you. Those are not properties of the product.
What a supplement label is and is not allowed to say
In the United States, a dietary supplement may carry a structure or function claim but may not make a disease claim, and the FDA does not review supplements before they are sold. That is the regulatory backdrop to every jar in this category, and it is why this page buys on the facts a label is required to carry rather than on the story above them.
The picks
Each pick below is justified on properties printed on the product label - form, elemental content, grade, ingredient panel or cost. None is justified by a health claim.
Pick 1
Magnesium glycinate capsules
Glycinate binds magnesium to the amino acid glycine, making it a chelated form. Many people choose it because chelated magnesium is generally reported as gentler on the stomach than magnesium oxide. The number that matters is elemental magnesium per capsule, because the grams of magnesium glycinate printed on the front panel include the glycine and overstate the mineral.
- Elemental magnesium declared per capsule
- Chelated, amino-acid-bound form
- Capsule count and cost per elemental mg on the label

Pick 2
Magnesium citrate capsules or powder
Citrate is one of the better-absorbed and most widely stocked forms. Powder lets you split a serving; capsules travel better. Either way, read the Supplement Facts panel for elemental magnesium rather than the total compound weight on the front.
- Elemental magnesium stated per serving
- Powder allows flexible dosing, capsules portability
- Compare cost per elemental mg across forms

Pick 3
Magnesium malate capsules
Malate binds magnesium to malic acid, a compound naturally present in fruit. It is offered as a chelated alternative with usually smaller capsules than glycinate at the same elemental dose. The difference between chelated forms is formulation and tolerance, not a proven difference in effect.
- Malic-acid-bound (chelated) form
- Often a smaller capsule at equal elemental dose
- Third-party tested options are available

Pick 4
Magnesium oxide tablets
Oxide is the cheapest and most common form on pharmacy shelves and also the least absorbed per milligram. It is still a legitimate, low-cost way to close a dietary gap if a plain tablet is what you will actually take every day. Remember the elemental figure: about 400 mg of magnesium oxide supplies roughly 240 mg of elemental magnesium.
- Lowest cost per tablet
- Widely stocked in physical stores
- Check elemental magnesium on the Supplement Facts panel

Pick 5
Magnesium L-threonate capsules
L-threonate is a newer, proprietary chelated form and the most expensive option per elemental milligram. Labels frequently list the whole compound rather than the mineral, so you have to do the arithmetic yourself. Choose it only if that specific form is what you set out to buy.
- Proprietary chelated form
- Highest cost per elemental mg
- Verify the elemental figure on the label

Questions
Is magnesium glycinate better than magnesium oxide?
They are different forms, not a good one and a bad one. Glycinate is chelated and generally reported as gentler on the stomach; oxide is cheaper and supplies less elemental magnesium per tablet. Choose on the elemental figure and on what you will actually take daily.
How much elemental magnesium is in a tablet?
It is on the Supplement Facts panel, which must state elemental magnesium per serving. The figure on the front of the jar is usually the weight of the whole compound and is not comparable between forms.
Why do you not show prices or ratings?
Because both change by the hour and neither is a property of the product you are judging. Each pick links to a live Amazon search so the current price and any reviews are shown to you by Amazon itself.
